FAQ

If your MATIC tokens were already on Polygon PoS network, they will be automatically upgraded to POL.

If you had MATIC tokens on Ethereum, you will need to upgrade manually using the migration contract deployed at the Polygon Portal. There is no deadline for users to upgrade from MATIC to POL.

The amount of POL tokens is initially set to 10 billion, at a 1:1 ratio with MATIC supply. POL supply is set to increase over time, with an annually compounding 1% of the supply minted to the PoS staking contract to cover staking rewards, and another 1% minted to a community treasury, which will be governed by a Community Board.

MATIC tokens which are exchanged for POL will be held in the migration contract in case they are needed for an unmigration at any point.

If you held MATIC on Polygon PoS network, they should be automatically upgraded to POL. Some wallets may not automatically update the token symbol, however, and you will need to update the native token symbol in your wallet’s RPC settings. In MetaMask, you can do this by going to Settings, Networks, Polygon Mainnet, and then manually changing the currency symbol to POL, see Polygon’s documentation for a detailed guide.

POL is a token with broad utility, and it is used across Polygon PoS and other AggLayer-connected networks for validator staking and rewards, as well as community governance.

POL is native to Polygon PoS and Ethereum.

The Polygon Labs Governance Team are responsible for introducing POL token.

POL token was launched on September 4, 2024 as an upgrade to the MATIC token, which was deployed in May 2020.
